The Governor General's Literary Award is perhaps Canada's most prestigious literary award. Independent juries are appointed by the Canada Council for the Arts, and meet separately to judge eligible books. Seven books are chosen in both English and French languages. The awards are presented by the Governor General of Canada and the Chairman of the Canada Council for the Arts. The winners receive $15,000.

The winner of the 2003 Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction (English language) is Douglas Glover for his ninth book, Elle.
